(Multiplication) Obama Is Setting Scholarships for Single Mothers

Single working mothers have perhaps the toughest job of all, in having to take care of their families on their own. A wish or a goal for many moms that has to be put on hold in order to take care of other responsibilities, is higher education. President Obama, together with his new administration, is, however, encouraging moms to make their education a priority. Obama scholarships will offer working mothers a great chance to improve their futures.

Obama is urging working moms in particular to participate in his Scholarships for Moms program, whilst still encouraging people of all ages to seek higher education. Building on The Scholarships for Moms program, is the long-standing offer of Pell grants by the federal government. Applied for through FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), Pell grants are the most commonly applied for forms of aid for students going to college. Now the Obama administration is making some changes to encourage more mothers to return to school.

The biggest incentive for the Scholarships for Moms program is the amount of money that is being offered. The maximum amount awarded through Pell grants is about $4,000 per student, but for mothers who apply to the program, that amount is increased to $5,000. The purpose of these grants is to allow working moms to return to school and earn a degree. In turn, that will allow them to better provide for their families now as well as in the future. In addition, the administration hopes that equipping mothers to earn more money as working professionals will also be a stimulus to the economy. Without worrying about the costs of school or having to pay back money for a loan, Moms can receive an education.

An added incentive for moms considering this program is that it applies to enrollment in nearly any type of higher education institution. Four-year universities are covered as well as smaller community colleges. You can choose either to go to a private school or a public one. For busy moms where staying on campus isn’t an option, online course study is offered. A comprehensive attempt to get eager mothers back into the classroom is the government’s Scholarships for Moms program.

The Obama scholarship basically takes a lot of the worry out of returning to school. Working moms can earn a degree in almost any area of interest. This means that they can be fully equipped to provide for their families. An unfulfilled wish or an unobtainable goal no longer has to be higher education. Cross curriculum teaching is an effective way to adapt the literal, interpretive, and critical thinking skills which develop as a result of reading. Pupils can be set Learning ?Quests? which cross curriculum boundaries this allows them to build their skills naturally.

In Britain there are different levels in the schools; in England KS1 - KS2 ? KS3 and in Scotland the curriculum for excellence. Recently all of these levels have been revised to increase the reliance on cross curriculum teaching. The general thinking is that using methods that mix subjects in a natural way brings significant teaching benefits.

Achieving Cross Curriculum teaching can be challenging. Much of the material available for KS1 - KS2 ? KS3 and the curriculum for excellence is based on the older systems. These systems tended to categorise the material into clearly bounded subjects. So whilst it’s possible to find plenty of material that relates to numeracy it’s hard to find material that brings together numeracy and literacy.

To achieve cross curriculum learning teachers often create teaching Trails or Quests. These are generally subject based and are able to cross curriculum boundaries in a natural way. With the push at KS2 and Curriculum for Excellence this method is likely to become more common.

Since there is a shortage of good of material available to allow the building of these trails teachers are now turning to the internet. Unfortunately this is often a demanding. Although the internet is a great source of literature it is often poorly produced and not suitable for pupils. Worse still is the dependence of many sites on advertising. All too often a child will access a site and be faced with good subject material but highly inappropriate adverts.

Recently there have been some new sites that have joined the ranks of school suppliers that are starting to offer the type of information needed by teachers. Sites like Learning Huddle offer teachers lots of subject literature but in a controlled environment. The lack of advertising and strong topic information ensure that teachers don’t have to spend many hours researching only to find they end the night with little to show.

So when teachers are now considering what to do for KS1 - KS2 ? KS3 and the curriculum for excellence they are now often turning away from the more traditional books and looking to the internet. The added benefit of this approach is the motivation that children seem to feel when they are involved with computers and the internet. There is a significant amount of subjective evidence that shows that children can be stimulated to learn when the material comes from a computer.

It seems unlikely that books and written material will disappear from schools. However there is definitely a push towards using the internet and computers in general to source material. So the needs of the revised KS1 - KS2 ? KS3 and the curriculum for excellence guidance for UK teachers may be met more and more in this way. In particular it is likely that much of this will be through the use of using topic information. By combining the various methods and approaches to teaching, the pupils can expect to gain much more valuable information out of teaching time.
